Provo Tabernacle Fire

Dave and I were driving back home from being out, and we saw some smoke in downtown Provo. We though it was odd and being curious, we drove toward it to find out what it was. As we turned the corner we saw this sad site;

Provo Tabernacle Fire

We parked a few blocks away and walked over and took some pictures. It's such a pretty building and it was so sad to see it in flames. It's possible that I have been in the building at some point when I was younger, but I don't remember, and don't have much connection to the building, other than the fact that I always thought it would be cool to take pictures there.... But I know a lot of people felt it an important building in their lives and the community.

Dave and I walked around and got these shots of the building.

The streets were sopping wet from all the water they had been trying to use to stop the fire. And the roads were a mess with traffic as they had the surrounding roads closed.

It was so weird/interesting to see how much ice was on the building. It was a burning building! It was on fire! But there was a lot of ice.

And a little more info... I did not take the below picture - I found it off KSL. But isn't it amazing!

"A portrait which was hanging inside of the east entrance of the tabernacle is lifting many discouraged spirits.

Friday, it appeared the portrait of Christ would be lost in the flames. But firefighters discovered Saturday that the portrait had indeed survived.

The portrait was burned by the fire, except in the area around the image of Christ. Those who have seen it are calling it a small miracle and are finding hope in the tragic loss of the tabernacle.

City officials say firefighters were able to safely recover the portrait. It has been turned over to the LDS Church."

And if you visit this blog (http://www.eat5hams.com/2010/12/fire-and-ice.html) This photographer got a fireman to take a picture of the image of Christ in the burning building.

  1. The picture you posted from Deseret News? Scott Winterton is actually Lyle's uncle! Small world, huh? Isn't that a neat picture? When I saw it I got chills.

    It's sad to see that building destroyed...it was so beautiful inside. Sean and I went to several free concerts for homeschoolers there.

    Great picture Adria. You have a great eye.
